In 1993, Marleen Stikker (Dutch) became the mayor of the world’s first virtual city – De Digitale Stad. In association with Amsterdam Council, DDS aimed to provide free internet access to everyone at a time when only a few hundred were privileged enough to experience the wonders.
Since then Marleen has founded the Waag Society, a non-profit foundation for researching and experimenting with new technologies, art and culture. But not stopping there, she co-founded the Pakhuis Zwijger a warehouse located on the banks of the IJ, a platform for media and culture.
Her newest venture, Picnic has become an annual event in Amsterdam attracting not only the locals but like-minded Europeans congregating to network, experiment and learn from some of the best media and technology industry leaders.
