Sony Launches Handbag Vaio P Series

23 01 2009

I would do anything to get my hands on a new, shiny red, Sony Vaio ultra-portable PC. I’ve owned a Sony Vaio laptop since I can remember but this newest release is not only stylish but fits neatly into your handbag whilst ticking all the boxes in the technical features department.

Martin Lynch from Gizmodo UK gives an indepth review worth sharing.

Sony does not want to be seen bottom-feeding with the netbook vendors which is why it’s decided to call its latest Vaio P series device an ultra-portable PC.

The Vaio P is certainly a looker, forsaking the usual shape of many small notebooks in favour of a long, rectangular shape. They say it’s just slightly larger than an office letter envelope and it weighs in at a very light 680g.

Despite its diminutive stature, it packs in quite a few impressive features. Of course, there’s Wi-Fi inside, along with GPS and bluetooth, but there’s also 3G, making it a mobile broadband powerhouse. The 8in LED-backlit display is also capable of a very impressive 1600 x 768 resolution and there’s a full keyboard with those isolated keys we love so much.

The unit uses an Intel Atom 1.6GHz chip, has 2GB of RAM and there’s a choice of traditional HDD or a 128GB solid state drive (SSD). Oddly, this baby runs Vista, which some think should have been left aside for the faster and more robust Windows XP.

As you can imagine all of this style and functionality comes at a typically Sony price: $900 (£594). And that’s before they add the usual UK weighting. Maybe it’s not a netbook after all. Due out here next month in 4 colours – Martin Lynch

Avoid being a fashion twin

23 01 2009

It’s a sure thing that once in your lifetime, you’ll experience that classic embarrassing moment, when you turn up at a party in your new frock only to find yourself standing next to someone wearing the exact same dress.

Its happened to me twice! The first time being the most memorable, when I met my boss’s wife for the first time in a London wine bar, where we both turned up wearing the same matching lime green and orange shorts suit (it was the 80s, after all).

But what could we do? Nothing; except discretely eye each other, convincing ourselves we wore it better than the other. The rest of the female patrons sympathetically looked on until they could stand it no more, shading their eyes from the concentration of day glow!

Twenty years on, and it looks like someone may have witnessed far too many embarrassing moments and come up with a possible solution to the problem: The Dress Registry with one clear mission “to lessen the chance that someone attending the same event as you will be wearing the EXACT same dress”

The concept is that you search for the event you’re attending, or you can add your own event including a wedding or private party then register your dress by disclosing details such as designer, length and colour or simply uploading an image. A sure way to check you’ll not happen upon your fashion twin at a party.

Will it take off? I’m not entirely convinced. As not everyone knows what they’ll wear to an event or even want to reveal all publicly. In addition, its an international registry with events from across the globe. Culturally, interest in fashion differs from country to country, so not all females would appreciate the benefits.

In the US, I can envisage this website being popular amongst celebrities registering their red carpet outfits which in turn promotes the work of the designers. But for every day folk who don’t get invited to Gala events on a regular basis, its unlikely to be worth book marking unless you’re a fashion celebrity watcher.

Show time at the App Theatre

23 01 2009

How often have you gone ahead and purchased a game for your iPhone, only to discover it wasn’t what you expected? The only way to avoid this in future, is to be better informed about an application, before you part with your cash – right?

App Theatre

App Theatre

The App Theater is an amateur video sharing website in YouTube style, dedicated to referring and promoting applications and games amongst iPhone and iPod users. A kind of show and tell, where you get to visually test drive before you buy.

Parallel to the increasing number of applications, a community of users and developer groups is steadily growing, with members encouraged to rate and comment on each other’s videos. And with everything available to buy direct via the App Store, you’re guaranteed never to be disappointed again!
